Postcards on the Edge

An International, National and Local Fundraiser

The Rotary Club of Dingle (on the westernmost edge of Ireland) is organising a major Fundraising event to benefit Polio Plus, the Visually Impaired and other charities supported by the club.

Your participation will help Rotary International raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

We are asking artists, musicians, writers, poets, actors, politicians, photographers, sports stars and well known personalities to create an original artwork on a postcard with their signature on the back. The postcards will be sold by silent auction. As the signatures will be on the back there will be great excitement at the event as the buyer will not know whose work has been purchased until all is revealed at the end of the evening!!

All the names of the participants will be publicised in advance. Purchasers will bid on postcards hoping to own a special original artwork created by their favourite artist or well known personality.

The event will attract major publicity. We would like you to help with this special project!

Valentine's Day

The Valentines Night Fundraiser in The Skellig Hotel was a great success with a total of approximately €7,148 being raised on the evening. There was a good turnout of 172 people on the night and fun was had by all. Congratulations must go to Mairead on this achievement and also a big thank you for all the hard work she put in and for doing such a good job on the organisation and running of the evening. Also, thank you to her children who helped with the sale of the raffle tickets throughout the evening. Thanks to Ray as well who spoke on the night and filled everyone in on what the Rotary Club is all about and also invited anyone who wishes to come and join us!

A Rotary Wren!!!

Have you ever seen the likes of this in all the history of dignified Rotary International?

On December 26, 'Wren Day', four groups of 'Wren Boys' march around Dingle. This year a fifth joined the fun for a few hours--the Dingle Rotary Wren. They marched, making fine music with two whistles, one harmonica and one boron, collecting for the worldwide relief of polio and having a great old time.

Christmas Appeal -- The Memory Tree

For the fourth Christmas Dingle Rotary has mounted a charity event aimed at making the season brighter for those in need. This is the 'memory tree,' standing at the back of Garvey's Supervalu. Many people going shopping paused on their way and filled out cards with the names of loved ones to be remembered. In the end hundreds of such cards adorned the tree. Standing in front of it, left to right, are Rotarians Tony Buckett, Sophie Murphy, President Máiréad de Staic and Briain de Staic.

A Festive Occasion

On Friday, November 7th, 2008 our esteemed past president, Briain de Staic, invited the club to a glorious dinner at Lord Baker’s restaurant. Our likewise esteemed current president, Máiréad de Staic, oversaw the course of events with her signature enthusiastic style.

A word about Lord Baker’s and its owner John Moriarty.

The restaurant, with its team, is the perfect haven of comfort, and John is the perfect host. Both have received numerous awards. Coming in out of the drizzle (as seems to be the case these days) a cozy fire and warm atmosphere greets you. We were seated at the back, in a giant glass conservatory surrounded by a garden--very elegant. The first class food seemed to arrive effortlessly and the early part of the evening was spent savouring it.

Then it was time for awards:
Paul O'Hara, Máiréad de Staic, Ray Farrell, Briain de Staic

Two recipients of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award were honoured for their contributions. Don O'Hara is a former Royal Marine who participated in and survived the landing in WWII Normandy. His current hobby and art is creating rocking horses and models of ships. Last summer he donated one of each for our Dingle Rotary auction, raising money to buy defibrillators for the peninsula.

Briain de Staic, our host, and Rotary president in 2007-08, also received the award for his service to the community. Due to his efforts the long planned purchase of five defibrillators was achieved. These devices are now stationed in various centrepoints and people have been trained in their use.

Following the awards presentations and gracious words of thanks, the atmosphere became filled with laughter, story and song as can only happen in Dingle.
